NEXT’s mission is to help entrepreneurs thrive. We’re doing that by building the only technology-led, full-stack provider of small business insurance in the industry, taking on the entire value chain and transforming the customer experience.

Simply put, wherever you find small businesses, you’ll find NEXT.

Since 2016, we’ve helped hundreds of thousands of small business customers across the United States get fast, customized and affordable coverage. We’re backed by industry leaders in insurance and tech, and we still have room to grow — that’s where you come in.

We’re looking for a Data Engineering Team Lead to join our dynamic and highly results-oriented Data Engineering Group. In this pivotal role, you will spearhead the design, implementation, and maintenance of our data architecture, provide mentorship to fellow data engineers, and serve as a focal point for professional knowledge. You will also work closely with business stakeholders, including Product and Data Analytics teams, to ensure our data solutions align with business objectives and drive impactful results.

What You’ll Do:

  • Lead major business data processes, pipelines, and infrastructure projects
  • Ship impactful data solutions and features that enhance our data consumer experience
  • Collaborate with business stakeholders to ensure alignment between data engineering initiatives and business objectives
  • Work closely with Data Science, Product Managers, Architects, and Engineering Leads to define clear roadmaps and priorities for the team.
  • Lead and mentor a team of passionate and talented data engineers, fostering their growth and development.
  • Manage employee career development by providing coaching and mentoring, continuous performance feedback, collaborating with employees on their objectives, and providing a clear path for progression through personal development plans.
  • Drive the adoption of modern data engineering practices and technologies within the team.
  • Conduct code and architecture design reviews to maintain a healthy balance between features and technical debt
  • Continuously learn and improve your professional and managerial skills to drive the team's success

What We Need:

  • Extensive experience collaborating with remote business stakeholders (Product, Data Analytics teams, Data Science, Marketing), effectively managing their needs, and aligning data solutions to support critical business objectives.
  • Demonstrated track record of successfully leading teams of 4+ data engineers, showcasing the ability to attract, inspire, and motivate talented individuals.
  • Proven experience (6+ years) in data engineering, showcasing a robust understanding of data architecture, ETL processes, and data warehousing principles.
  • Hands-on proficiency with leading data engineering tools and technologies, including SQL, Python, Apache Spark, and other relevant frameworks.
  • Familiarity with cloud computing platforms, especially AWS, for the development and deployment of data solutions.
  • Strong grasp of data modeling concepts and proven experience in designing data solutions using cloud tools.
  • Strong communication skills that help you to build trust, resolve conflicts, and provide feedback.

Don’t meet every single requirement? Studies have shown that some underrepresented people are less likely to apply to jobs unless they meet every single qualification. At NEXT, we are dedicated to building a diverse, inclusive and respectful workplace, so if you’re excited about this role but your past experience doesn’t align perfectly with every qualification in the job description, we encourage you to apply anyways. You may be just the right candidate for this or other roles.
