The Company

At SPAN, we are building products to drive the rapid adoption of renewable energy and enable a more modern, flexible grid. Span’s smart panel replaces the standard electrical panel to become the center for connected power in the home, providing intelligent load-balancing and revolutionary edge-of-grid controls through the Span mobile app.

The Role

We are seeking an experienced and driven electrical engineer to own critical electronic design on SPAN’s next generation of products. As a senior design engineer, you will be responsible for developing state of the art energy management hardware that will ship to market and power people’s homes. You will own the design through all stages of development, collaborating with the R&D, Power Electronics, Mechanical, Test, and Manufacturing teams to bring your concept to life.

In this role, you will:

  • Own PCB/assembly designs with precision analog, power, and digital content.

  • Bring up, validate, and test the performance of PCBAs in the system.

  • Design or specify magnetic components and wire harness assemblies.

  • Collaborate with internal and external teams on specification of mechanical interfaces, thermal interfaces, and overall product function.

  • Be responsible for the design, development, production, testing, and maintenance of embedded systems.

  • Work with electrical engineers and firmware engineers to create embedded systems and drive the design of the compute platform and its periphery to ensure that hardware functions and software features are implemented.

  • Develop and validate highly robust repeatable power and analog circuit topologies.

  • Design power, mixed signal, and digital circuits and circuit components

  • Place and route PCB layouts to comply with creepage and clearance rules, high voltage safety concerns, high speed signal integrity requirements, low noise analog design best practices, EMC/EMI regulations, and thermal and mechanical design requirements.

  • Work with contract manufacturers throughout the full product lifecycle to ensure parts are made to specification and achieve our standards for product quality and yield.

About You

Required Qualifications

We are seeking a seasoned electrical engineer who has:

  • BS or MS in Electrical Engineering or Electrical Engineering/Computer Science.

  • 3+ years of experience developing products from initial concepts to mass production, including the design of PCBAs.

  • Experience in bring up and benchtop validation of PCBAs.

  • Hands-on approach, whether it be building a prototype or performing testing.

  • Strong grasp on fundamentals covering circuit analysis, electromagnetics, as well as basic feedback and control theory.

  • Broad knowledge of component types, including availability and supply chain concerns.

  • Altium Designer (or equivalent Altium product) experience

Bonus Qualifications

We would love to hire someone who has some (but not necessarily all) of the following:

  • Designed magnetic devices such as transformers or inductors.

  • Knowledge of national and international safety and regulatory requirements such as UL, National Electric Code(NEC), FCC, IEC, and ISO.

  • Experience working closely with contract manufacturers and suppliers.

  • Designed high-voltage isolated power and data interfaces.

  • Experience with the development of performance validation, environmental, and reliability tests.

  • Experience with RF design and testing (WiFi/BLE, LTE, Zigbee, LoRa, etc.)

  • Experience with designing compute-intensive applications, with high-speed interfaces and EMI mitigation experience
