Starfish Space is a fast-growing space startup in Seattle, Washington founded by former Blue Origin and NASA engineers. We are giving life to on-orbit services with our Otter servicing vehicle. We have raised over $22M in venture funding to-date, and have been recognized by NASA and the US Space Force.

In summer 2023, we’re launching our Otter Pup demonstration mission to space. This will be the first-ever docking between two commercial satellites in Low Earth Orbit, and the first satellite docking ever using electric propulsion (view a video overview of Otter Pup here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QLWut6TFJBs&t). Throughout 2023, we’ll be focused on ensuring a successful Otter Pup mission, as well as continuing development of our full-scale Otter servicing vehicle.

Position Description

Satellite servicing missions require autonomous, robotic actions in orbit. To fulfill our mission Starfish is developing the Otter servicing vehicle, the Nautilus capture mechanism, and other hardware technology to interact with and maximize the operational value of satellites. This position will support the development of structures, mechanisms, and robotics, and relies heavily on mechanical engineering, electromechanical prototyping, and system design skills. This engineer will do everything ranging from designing in CAD, to manufacturing prototypes, to building hardware that performs first-of-its-kind satellite servicing on-orbit.

  • Must be a US person (citizen or permanent resident)
  • Willing to work from Tukwila, Washington
  • Capable of working a dynamic, fast paced startup environment
  • Mechanical and/or electrical prototyping capability
  • B.S. degree or equivalent in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering or similar field

Desired Experience

  • Previous experience designing and/or prototyping space systems
  • Working knowledge of mechanical engineering
  • Proficiency with mechanical engineering tools such as CAD and FEA

ITAR Requirements

To conform to U.S. Government space technology export regulations, including the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) you must be a U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident of the U.S., protected individual as defined by 8 U.S.C. 1324b(a)(3), or eligible to obtain the required authorizations from the U.S. Department of State.
